DIY Ringflash

This has been done time and time again, but I thought I would just share my version of a homemade ring flash. Made entirely out of cardboard, tinfoil, and really crappy liquid glue. My household lacks a glue gun.

Backside:

Inside:

Tinfoil applied to hood:

Tin foil applied to funnel and light leak guards glued on:

Tinfoil put onto inside and tested on low power:

The outcome for that picture wasn’t the best, I then lowered the tin foil to allow more light “flow” through the circle. After I added a layer of paper over top to diffuse the light. I also did a sloppy black paint job on it because I was bored…pretty bad idea…but here’s what it looks like:

Even further into the future I plan to make it completely out of carbon fiber and have straps to hold onto two 580EX II’s. (Right now I’m using some cheap Vivitar flash that hardly delivers enough power for far distance shots.)

So it’s far from being ‘done’ but I guess this is Mark I. Can’t wait to modify it in the future / possibly increase it’s size with a tripod mount.

Here’s a test shot of my cat to showcase it’s effect. Note the circular reflection in her eyes. : )

More shots can be found on my Flickr.
